Our standard industrial finish showcases the natural beauty of hand-spun aluminium. The raw metal surface develops a subtle patina over time, creating an authentic workshop aesthetic perfect for loft conversions, modern kitchens, and contemporary spaces.

Brushed Aluminium – Subtle Sophistication

Hand-brushed by our craftsmen at the J D Burford workshop, this finish creates soft directional grain that catches light beautifully. The brushed surface reduces fingerprints while adding textural interest and a more refined character than raw aluminium.

Polished Aluminium – Mirror Brilliance

Polished to a mirror finish using bench-mounted tools, this creates the most dramatic transformation. The highly reflective surface brings warmth and sophistication, resembling a chromed light while maintaining aluminium’s lightweight durability. As shown in the Finnish cottage installation, polished pendants become statement pieces that elevate entire interiors.

How We Create These Finishes

At our South Wales workshop, each finish is applied by hand using traditional metalworking techniques:

Brushing Process

Our craftsmen hand-brush each light using progressive grades of abrasive pads, creating consistent directional grain. This patient, manual process takes 15-20 minutes per light but ensures the subtle, professional finish that machines cannot replicate.

Polishing Process

We use bench-mounted polishing wheels with specialized compounds to achieve the mirror finish. The process involves multiple stages:

• Initial polish: Removes surface irregularities using coarser compounds
• Progressive refinement: Gradually finer polishing compounds smooth the surface
• Final buffing: Creates the mirror-bright finish using ultra-fine compounds
• Protective treatment: Sealed to maintain brilliance and resist oxidation

This traditional approach, adapted from techniques perfected since the 1950s, creates a depth of shine impossible with faster industrial methods. Each light receives 30-40 minutes of careful attention to achieve that showroom finish.

Important note for wall lights: Raw, Brushed and polished finishes should only be used indoors or in fully protected areas (covered porches, conservatories). These finishes are not suitable for direct weather exposure. For outdoor installation, choose our powder-coated colour options which are IP44 rated. → Fisherman’s Wall Lights

How to Order

Adding a brushed or polished finish is simple:

1. Select your preferred pendant or wall light from the options above
2. On the product page, choose your finish option:
   • Raw Aluminium (standard – no extra cost)
   • Brushed Aluminium (+£18.70)
   • Polished Aluminium (+£22.50)
3. Complete your order as normal

Your light will be hand-finished at our workshop and dispatched within our standard 14-18 day lead time.

Care & Maintenance

Raw Aluminium

Minimal maintenance required. Natural patina will develop over time. Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent if needed.

Brushed Aluminium

Wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. For fingerprints, use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol. Always follow the grain direction when cleaning to maintain the brushed effect.

Polished Aluminium

Polish periodically with a soft cloth and aluminium polish to maintain mirror finish. We recommend cleaning every 3-6 months for best results. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface.
